How to Become a Model
Do you think you have what it takes to be a model? Do you want to see your own face when you look at flat screen tvs? You need a lot more than just a pretty face. Modeling is a demanding, competitive industry and not for the faint of heart. If you are ready to work hard, here are some tips for how to become a model.
First, realize that there are many different types of models. From runway to catalogue, to plus-size modeling, all different shapes and sizes are needed. It is important to understand that there are some basic physical qualities you need to possess in order to become a successful model. Clear skin and overall symmetrical features are a must but you do not necessarily need to be drop-dead gorgeous. Many models have plain features but are extremely photogenic.
Next, you should have some photos taken. They do not need to be professionally shot, but should showcase your ability to model. You should have one headshot and one body shot to offer agencies. 8×10 photos are best. If you can afford professional-quality photos that would be advisable. These photos are proof that you have a photogenic look so they are important.
Seek out only reputable modeling agencies to work with. A trustworthy agency will rarely ask you to provide any money up front. However, some agencies may charge a fee for test shots and initial expenses, so review their requests carefully. If you choose to shoot with a photographer first, it is important to bring a chaperone with you for safety. Performing a background check on the photographer is a good idea to help ensure that you are working as safely as possible.
It is imperative to be professional and prepared. Successful models are on time, have head and body shots available for review, are polite and have practiced their walk (if applicable) and facial expressions. It is possible that an agency will ask you to look sad, happy or surprised for test shots, so practice making these expressions beforehand. Being open to criticism is also a great way to learn how to become a model. Listening to what the agencies have to say about your body and overall look will increase your chances of booking future jobs.
If you are serious about learning how to become a model, treat it like a real job. When you appreciate that there is a lot of work that goes on behind all the glitz and glamour, the more successful you are apt to be.
